Treat Kids Well
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40, 45, NIV)
Hang on a minute while I climb up on my soapbox….That’s better… LOL!
Treat kids well. Crazy I know. Growing up, I noticed that some adults thought talking to kids was a bully contest. Who could get the kids to behave with the rudest yelling? Some adults thought kids could only hear harsh voices, the madder you seemed, the more you could “get them to behave.” Other adults were fantastic and I used them as an example.
Having had my own kids, I absolutely believe the opposite. If your kid is running into the street, then yell to get their attention.
If they’re not listening for the hundredth time, quietly get their attention, listen to their frustrations, then gently explain how they missed the mark. Be the example of how you want them to behave.
People frustrate each other, I don’t care how old you are. Kids frustrate adults. Adults frustrate each other. Friends, co-workers, couples, we all frustrate each other from time to time.
Set expectations calmly and let them know what you expect. Just as we can’t treat our siblings like dirt and expect them to continue playing with us, we can’t treat our kids like dirt and expect them to grow up into kind individuals, much less hand around us when they have their own lives.
